Why are changes being considered?
Parking availability and the way parking is managed can influence the number of vehicles travelling into an area.
We need to balance the importance of parking for people who need to use a car with our wider aims of creating safer streets, improving air quality, reducing congestion and supporting more sustainable travel choices.
We are not starting from scratch. Through previous consultations and engagement, including work on the Movement Strategy and Clean Air Strategy, people have told us they want cleaner air, less congestion, safer streets and more reliable, sustainable travel choices. This consultation builds on that feedback by asking for views on how parking charges could support those wider aims, while still recognising that some people need to use a car.
Supporting residents and the local economy
We recognise that some people need to travel by car and that short-stay city-centre parking supports access to shops, services, employment and other facilities.
The proposals are intended to balance these needs with measures that support safer streets, cleaner air and more sustainable travel.
We want your views before decisions are made
These are proposals, not confirmed changes.
Your feedback will be considered as part of the council's budget-setting process. It will help councillors understand the possible effects of the proposals and decide which, if any, should be developed further.
Previous consultation feedback has resulted in proposals being changed or withdrawn. Examples include proposals to extend charging at Bath Hill East car park in Keynsham to Saturdays and to introduce emissions-based parking charges for motorbikes.
